Big Magic from Elizabeth Gilbert with Marie Forleo

Okay, I know it’s been awhile.  I fell in love with a wonderful man and deeper in love with my life and my work and spent the summer coaching and playing and, as you well know, not writing.

But I miss my creativity (and YOU)!

Writing is my creative way of connecting with you, myself, my work, and my imagination, so I’m back and I’ve got a great share for you, this week, on this very topic of creative living!

It’s an interview with Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat, Pray, Love among many other articles, poems, and books), by Marie Forleo (coach, speaker, author), where the two are discussing Gilbert’s latest book Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear.

Some of the insights I enjoyed in this interview and that you will hear are:

  • the importance of fear and how it is your companion not your adversary in creativity (YES!)
  • what to say and do when fear tries to stop you from taking creative risks
  • why trying to help people with your art is a “heavy mandate” and what to focus on instead
  • how to determine what creative endeavor is for you (the “shit sandwich” part cracked me up because it’s so true!)
  • how to take risks in a way that you can keep taking them and the difference between “child-like” and “child-ish” in your pursuit of a creative life (I SO loved this distinction and am a huge advocate for this approach!)

Plus, if you’ve ever had to – or want to – present or speak to a group, you will enjoy her candid discussion of developing herself as a speaker (Gilbert has had millions of people watch her TED Talks and was included as a speaker in Oprah’s stadium tour).

I hope you enjoy this interview and I’d love to hear back from you in a comment if there is an insight or pearl of wisdom that inspired you and why.

Your two cents might be just the wisdom someone else needed to hear, so please do leave a comment.

Also, if there is someone creative in your life who might enjoy this, please share it with them.  It means so much when you know a friend is thinking of you.
